EBOLA VIRUS DISEASE IN NIGERIA: UPDATE BY THE MINISTER OF HEALTH
FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA
Saturday August 16, 2014
As at today, the statistics indicate:
1. Total number of confirmed cases of EVD in Nigeria = 12
2. Number of deaths due to EVD = 4
3. Number of persons under surveillance in Lagos = 189
4. Number of persons under surveillance in Enugu = 6(continue)

As you are aware, the patients under treatment have now been moved to the new 40 bed capacity isolation ward provided by the Lagos State Government.  Additional equipment has also been made available to the new isolation ward by the Federal Government.
At present, 5 of the patients have almost fully recovered.

You will recall that last Thursday, I announced that we were ready to deploy an experimental drug, nano silver, if it was cleared by the National Health Research Ethics Committee. Although, the drug had since last Thursday been made available to the Emergency Operations Centre in Lagos, it had not been administered to any patient because we were awaiting clearance by the National Health Research Ethics Committee.

I regret to inform you that the drug did not meet the requirements of the National Health Research Ethics code. Accordingly, approval for its use was withheld by the National Health Research Ethics Committee.
I wish to inform you, however that other candidate drugs are currently being evaluated by the Treatment Research Group for EVD. As soon as any of the experimental drugs is cleared by the National Health Research Ethics Committee and is made available, we shall include it in the treatment regimen subject to the informed consent of the patient.
The first Nigerian to be diagnosed of EVD, a female doctor, was discharged home this evening.
Thank you

some basic facts about EVD

Ravaging Ebola Virus Disease which has killed over
500 people in neighbouring West Africa countries
has hit Lagos. True or false; we all need to be aware
of the symptoms and necessary preventive
measures to take in reducing or stopping the spread
of this deadly virus in our dear country. Early
symptoms of this disease include fever, headache,
diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, sore throat, backache,
and joint pains. Later symptoms include bleeding
from the eyes, ears and nose, mouth and rectum, eye, swelling of the genitals and rashes all over
the body that often contain blood. It could progress
to coma and shock. I want us to know that staying
away from that hospital will not in any way stop the
spread of this virus among the people. The Liberian
who brought the virus into Nigeria, obviously sat in
the plane with other Nigerians, and also passed
through airport officials. Therefore, the following are
the preventive measures we need to take, rather
than avoiding the 'said' hospital:

 Have a personal
hand sanitizer and use it as frequent as possible (like
every 30 minutes).

Do not buy and eat any fruit
directly without washing it very well.

Stay away from
eating any meat that you do not know it's source,
especially our lovely 'Suya'.

Avoid putting your
hands into your mouth or biting our finger, we need
to consciously stop for now).

Try as much as you can
to avoid unnecessary handshakes for now, or
immediately after, use your sanitizer.Unlike HIV,
Ebola can be spread through contact with body
sweat or saliva, so take caution wen you board any
‘Mass Transit’. Generally, avoid having contacts with
body fluid.

Consider bathing as often as you can.
Most importantly, get more information about Ebola,
it's free on google. Please stay safe and healthy....

5 Foods That'll Make You Look Younger

These babies are great for your skin.
1. Sweet Potatoes
Beta-carotene, which makes these tubers orange, balances your skin's pH, helps combat dryness, and promotes cell turnover, all resulting in smoother skin.
2. Wild Salmon

The pigment that makes the fish pink, astaxanthin, is a powerful foe of free radicals, rogue molecules that damage cell membranes and DNA and cause skin to age. A study found that eating one serving every five days can prevent actinic keratoses-ugly rough patches that are precancerous.
3. Tomatoes
The fruit's red pigment, lycopene, is a potent antioxidant that shields skin from sun damage-like sunscreen, but from the inside out. To best absorb lycopene, eat tomatoes with olive oil.

4. Citrus Fruits

Vitamin C is essential to building collagen, a vital component of young-looking skin, which starts breaking down in your twenties. Citrus also contains bioflavonoids, which protect skin from UV rays and help prevent cell death.
5. Leafy Greens
Spinach, kale, and other greens contain lutein, which protects skin from sun-induced inflammation and wrinkles.
